The mother of a Cornell University student arrested for threatening to open fire at a campus Jewish center has said she fears her troubled son's life is over.

Patrick Dai, a 21-year-old engineering student, was arrested on October 31 after making a string of antisemitic threats online.

His mother Bing Liu, 53, told The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle her son had been severely depressed and was on medication for several years.

She said he posted an apology online for his hateful comments before he was arrested, and said she wished that had got more attention.

'Why didn't they reveal this important piece of information?' she said. 'Also, why didn't the school?'

She said her son now 'has no future.'

Dai lived with his mother and 15-year-old brother at the weekends in the village of Pittsford, home to 1,300 people on the outskirts of Rochester.

He had been spending weekends at the family home due to his worsening mental health.

His father, a professor of optics, the study of light and vision, teaches at Tianjin University in China and is now overseas. He previously taught at the University of Rochester.

Dai allegedly posted the threats online on October 28 and 29, when he was at the family home.

He posted threatening messages to the Cornell section of an online discussion site, including posts calling for the deaths of Jewish people and a post that said 'gonna shoot up 104 west.'

The site is a Cornell University dining hall that caters predominantly to Kosher diets and is located next to the Cornell Jewish Center.

In another post, Dai allegedly threatened to 'stab' and 'slit the throat' of any Jewish males he sees on campus, to rape and throw off a cliff any Jewish females, and to behead any Jewish babies.

In that same post, Dai threatened to 'bring an assault rifle to campus and shoot all you pig jews.'

Of the several messages left on the school's Greekrank page - a forum meant for fraternity and sorority reviews - were messages with the headlines 'Eliminate Jewish living from Cornell Campus' or 'Israel deserved 10/7'

Hours later, he wrote: 'Apologies. There is no room for divisive statements in person or online. I am sorry.

'A lesser man would try to hide behind a mask and that is exactly what I did. Shameful, calling for violence against people because of a cruel war a thousand miles away. Even more shameful because there is no excuse for the targeting of innocent civilians, much less my classmates.'

He added: 'No amount of depression or loneliness or sadness is an excuse for terror or terroristic threats.'

The apology was signed 'a depressed suicidal person,' and concluded with a P.S.: 'Once it gets on the news please don't mock my parents or acquaintances or other family members too much they weren't the ones responsible it was all me.'

Dai returned to campus on October 30, and was arrested the following day.

The troubled young man was described by his mother as disciplined and focused.

He played high school tennis and was academically gifted, becoming a National Merit Scholar and achieving the highest possible score on his ACT standardized test - a score reached, according to the paper, by two-tenths of one percent of those who sit the test.

But he had struggled with the move to college, and had taken three earlier semesters off.

Cornell University, near Ithaca in upstate New York, has been roiled by unrest since the October 7 Hamas terror attack

Nearly 100 incidents of anti-Semitic violence or intimidation have been recorded at US colleges and universities since the Hamas attacks and in the ensuing conflict

Liu said her son's problems were exacerbated by the isolation of the pandemic, and this summer he was prescribed the anti-depressant Lexapro.

Dai disliked the medicine, and complained it was making his depression and suicidal thoughts worse.

Following his arrest, Dai is being held in the Broome County jail, and his mother said she had barely slept.

'I worry about him,' Liu said. 'He needs to take medication.'

Monica Gebel of the Levine Center to End Hate praised the police who quickly tracked Dai down and arrested him, but said his arrest was symptomatic of a wider problem.

'What's worrisome is that with thousands and thousands, even millions of students, attending colleges, we don't know who among them is properly caring for their mental health, whose needs are not being served,' said Gebel.

'And, unfortunately, until something like this happens, we have no indication of who is suffering.'

U.S. adults by wide margins say top universities are not doing enough to crack down on anti-Semitism and support for Hamas hardliners on campus, a DailyMail.com/TIPP Poll published on Tuesday shows.

Nearly two-thirds of respondents to our survey — 63 percent — said elite schools were failing to meet the challenge of hateful rhetoric. Another 14 percent disagreed, and 23 percent said they were unsure.

Our poll comes as top schools have become a flash point over Israel's escalating military offensive into Gaza, aimed at destroying Hamas militants who murdered and captured hundreds of people, mostly civilians, last month.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Tuesday sent a letter to the presidents of 700 US universities and colleges, calling for action against rising antisemitism on their campuses.

'Each of the higher education institutions can and should lead the fight against the scourge of anti-Semitism,' Herzog wrote, according to the Jerusalem Post.

'We all know that evil ideologies that are directed towards Jews always signal a much wider intellectual collapse.'

Our survey of about 1,400 US adults showed that most Americans agree with Herzog that US schools were not doing enough.

Some 41 percent said they felt strongly that US schools were not doing enough.

Another 22 percent agreed somewhat.

That included majorities across all regions of the US, and in all age groups.

Only a small margin of respondents — 14 percent — said the administrators of US colleges had anti-Semitism under control.

Still, nearly a quarter of respondents said they were not sure whether the schools had it right.

There was little difference between the attitudes of Republicans and Democrats.

Independent voters were less likely to criticize the universities.
